Rather than jump into a description of personal coaching, and what we offer here at TC Gill Coaching, I invite you to stop a minute and read the questions below. Some may apply, some may not, but try to Stop! And really think about them…

  • How would you feel 5, 10 or 15 years from now, and you are still stuck in that job you don’t like?

I hope they got you thinking. What part of your life feels like it needs change? Do you keep thinking about it? Maybe you feel brave and courageous sometimes… “Give it a go”, only to lose steam. Or as I like to put it, life gets in the way. Maybe you get in the way?

As we get older, we start to get stuck into a routine and find ourselves in comfort zones. We can call them comfort zones, but we can also feel uncomfortable within them. We resist change, because we feel we have to stay with the status quo. Even when it pains us. So what’s causing you pain in your life. What is it that you keep coming back to, but ultimately you give up or don’t succeed in? That thing in your life that keeps niggling at you, but unfortunately keep giving up on changing it.  Maybe you’ve lost your confidence or drive. Maybe you feel your actions are out of your control, and no matter how hard you try, you just can’t get traction on it.

This is where personal and professional life coaching comes in.

Our approach to coaching

In summary, our coaching style is as follows:-

With the two approaches (which are discussed below), we create an effective and potent catalyst for change. Here at TC Gill coaching, we believe that we are a system of processes and habits that work together to make a complex, but amazing, unique you. Some of these habits are evolutionary habits (or systems) that we have inherited. Others are habits that are a product of our environment and life journey. These habits and systems define who you are.

Coming from an Engineering background, I take the approach of an engineer to see which habits are enabling the potential in you, and those that require attenuation (reduction) that get in the way of you.

Co-Active Coaching®

The particular style of coaching we employ here is called Co-Active coaching. Co-Active makes the following clear assumption from the beginning:-

“People are naturally creative, resourceful and whole”

Yup! That’s right. We take the standpoint that there is nothing broken. As your coach, we are not here to fix anything. We have a strong belief that you have the natural creativity within you to create a vision that best suites you. And that you have all the resources you need to make it happen. And there is nothing “missing” that we need to create. It’s all there within you waiting to be engaged and used to full effect.

As your partners in the coaching relationship, we are here to help you fully realise this statement. Ideally (and this is our goal), you will come to realise this fully yourself and expedite your potential in all aspects of your life.

Additional and important aspects of the Co-active methodology are:-

  • In Co-active coaching we focus heavily on the coaching relationship. This is so that the coaching can be tailored for the individual who has unique:-
    • Goals
    • Circumstances
    • Desire for change
    • Abilities
    • And habits of self-sabotage
  • We work to align your life and career to your values.
  • Work on the balance between two opposite forces of human nature:-
    • Being (we rarely stop to see how things are really effecting us)
    • Doing (most of us spend most of our time in action “Doing stuff”, but never stopping to think if it’s the right thing for us)

Transform and re-engineer you for success…

Here at TCGill coaching there are many approaches to transformation and positive change. We are in no way inventing something new! Oh no no no! We are taking years and years and years… and years (I think you get the point) of work and research, and applying it to our clients. There is a wealth of knowledge out that some people may be aware of, but most of us not. Either way, we bring our clients to a point where they become fully aware (Mindful) of subconscious behaviours (Habits). That’s the first step. Then we teach you about the mechanics of whatever that is (Education). Education expands awareness and allows the client to become even more aware of, and potentially in control of, repetitive behaviours that they thought were out of their control. The trick then is to adjust, diminish or replace these behaviours. We in effect re-engineer you. Don’t worry if an image of Robocop comes to mind. You are still you, but a better you.

Awareness

Knowledge or perception of a situation/fact allows us wake up to what is really happening. Otherwise we are on autopilot. The habitual behaviours that we have inherited, or learnt through nurture and our environment, define every single aspect of our life. They define who we are. Awareness creates a doorway to something new. What we can see and shine our awareness on, can be changed and transformed. Awareness is the key to transformation.

Knowledge

Knowledge is power...

Knowledge

When the brain is aware, and then fed with information about its own inner workings, and also the workings of the rest of the body, something magical happens. The awareness of what is going on, or what may happen, becomes expanded. Through knowledge we become empowered. We are able to understand our inner workings and think of ways to adjust, replace or eliminate behaviours. We are able to make more informed choices about our actions. We are even able to accept things about us that we understand are truly natural. We are able to accept things that are attributes of being human. So rather than taking on a direct approach to change what we don’t want, we are able to accept and be smart about an alternative approach.

Habits define who we are...

Habit Engineering

Habits define our life. Habits define who we are. We are a collection of habits and we can re-engineer them. I present to you a great quote that encapsulates the importance of habits.

What coaching is not

This sounds like a negative statement, but it is important that we get a good handle on what TC Gill Coaching provides. The following three often get confused:-

  • Counselling
  • Mentoring
  • Coaching

There is much overlap between them, and they are all very valuable. But they are not the same thing. My aim is not to go into detailed definitions here, but to provide some quick comparisons that you quickly achieve some awareness of where coaching sits in the spectrum of services available.

Counsellors are highly trained professionals with specific skills in providing guidance to clients in resolving personal or psychological problems. They provide a talking therapy for the treatment of mental patterns that are harming their life and health. If coaching starts to move into the realm of counselling, we at TC Gill coaching take the position of what is most beneficial to the wellbeing and health of the client, and advice and support them in seeking counselling services.

 

Mentoring & Coaching

Coaching Mentoring
Assumes that the person has everything they need to develop further. Similar, but with the addition of advice & Teaching

Mentoring involves the use of the same models and skills associated with coaching:-

  • questioning,
  • listening,
  • Clarifying
  • Reframing

However mentoring normally requires someone with experience in a given field, and provides advice more readily. We sometimes do this in coaching if it is appropriate, but we make very clear distinction when we are moving into this realm. Here at TC Gill Coaching, we actually make it explicitly clear and say we are taking off our coaching hat, and putting on our mentoring one.

TC is a wonderful coach.  He is very intuitive and manages to lock into areas of potential I wouldn’t have ordinarily considered.  He is fun and creative as a coach and I always feel he has my best interests at heart.  I love his energy and pace and find that when he takes me out of my comfort zone I am able to see what else is possible.  TC you are a great coach and thank you!
